Prayer Devotional: Day 18

For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. – 2 Corinthians 4:6 KJV

The Lord is the source of all pure light. He created light in the beginning. He provides sunlight for plants to grow so that people can eat nutritious foods.

The Lord enlightens our understanding the more we read His Word, pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance, and spend time with other believers who uphold and strengthen our faith, the closer we get to Him.

It is because of His light that we are strong in the midst of dark times. Jesus gives us strength and wisdom. Amen.

Prayer Devotional: Day 5

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ. – 2 Corinthians 4:6 NIV

The first thing God created was light when He was making the earth.

Light makes plants grow. The sunlight helps us reset our circadian rhythms so that we can sleep better at night.

God’s light illuminates the way we should go.

In heaven, there will be no sun because God’s light will be all that we need. Amen.

Day 239

This is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all. – 1 John 1:5 NIV

“Chiaroscuro is an Italian artistic term used to describe the dramatic effect of contrasting areas of light and dark in an artwork, particularly paintings. It comes from the combination of the Italian words for ‘light’ and ‘dark.'” https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/chiaroscuro

God is a God of light. In Him, there is no darkness.

But we are people who are both light and dark. We live in a world that also includes darkness, and because of that, we come to appreciate the appearance of dawn’s first light even more.

Each day is an opportunity to start new with God.

It is the contrast of light and dark that makes us aware of how much we need God’s light. He lights up our lives, literally. Amen.

Day 190

Seek the Lord and His strength; Seek His face evermore! – 1 Chronicles 16:11 NKJV

We can call upon the Lord, and He will give us strength whenever we need it.

Our Heavenly Father is so holy that we cannot look at Him directly, but one day, after a lifetime of seeking His face, we will get to meet Him face to face. What a glorious day that will be!

We are never alone, because He is with us. He will direct us wherever we go.

The Lord gives us just enough light for the step we are on. He does not overwhelm us with all the details of the path ahead. He gives us the right amount of light to move forward.

When we stop to praise and appreciate His goodness and mercy, we can see how strong He is. Amen.

Day 149

Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness; He is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous. – Psalm 112:4 NKJV

In the middle of the night, there is darkness.

When we can’t sleep because we have too much on our minds, it can help to get up and read the Scriptures. God’s voice shines through the darkness. Whatever we are going through, His grace and mercy will shine upon us.

We have a compassionate God. He understands our pain and worries. He can direct our paths.

When it’s dark, we can’t see straight. His light shows us the way to go. He never leads us astray.

We can trust that when the sun comes up, we’ll have enough light to see clearly. Amen.

Day 148

Through Jesus, therefore let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise–the fruit of our lips that confess His name. And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. Hebrews 13:15-16 NIV

What pleases and impresses our peers–fame, fortune, and fun–isn’t what necessarily pleases God. God is pleased when we share the good news about Jesus with others. God is pleased when we praise His name.

He certainly deserves our praise.

Whenever we come out of a health crisis alive, we can remember how critical it is to praise Him. We can credit Him for our lives and be grateful for everything that He has given us.

The world would be a dark place without Jesus. One of the first things God said at the creation of the Earth was, “Let there be light.” He is the light in our lives. Amen.

Day 119

The heavens praise your wonders, O Lord, your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the Holy ones. For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord? Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings? – Psalm 89:5-6 NIV

Whenever I am feeling down, I look to the skies and the heavens remind me how great God is. Nothing is impossible for Him. He is the light in our lives.

Nobody can predict the future, so why do we spend time worrying about things that haven’t happened yet?

Turning our eyes upon Jesus reminds us of the goodness we have in our lives day to day, moment to moment. We have good people in our lives to be thankful for. Our lives are full. We can be a beacon of light for others as well. Amen.

Day 108

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. – 2 Corinthians 4:6 NIV

COVID-19 has cast a dark shadow on our activities in 2020. It has changed how we celebrate holidays with family and how we interact with our church members and volunteer groups.

God gives us light in the darkness. Even though things are not the same as they were before, does He not give us a sunrise each morning and a sunset each night? There is still beauty in God’s creations in nature and warmth in our interactions with our friends, even if we have to meet virtually.

In some ways, virtual meetings have brought people who are physically at a distance closer. The Lord knows what He is doing. Amen.

Prayer Journal: Day 102

Day 102

For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light. – Psalm 36:9 NIV

Light comes from God. It is one of His gifts to us.

Light brings life and cheer.

During Christmas time we drive our son at night around the neighborhood to see the lights. Even if the day had been challenging or tiring, seeing the lights brings good cheer.

God allows light into our lives, and we can shine our light by following His guidance. He blesses our work and those we work with. It’s through His light and goodness that we can make a difference in the world.

I pray every day that God will direct me to make a positive difference in the lives of those He puts within my path. He always directs me when I ask Him. Amen.
