Auntie Lena was kind to everyone. Her kindness touched all those she loved and took care of. Although she never married or had children of her own, she was like a mother to multiple generations, always eager to provide the best meat balls, chicken cutlets, beef stew, pasta with “Chi-Chi” beans, or ice cream sandwiches if you wanted a treat.
She made beautiful crocheted blankets and scarves, intricate embroidery masterpieces, and if you were cold, she’d fetch a brand new sweater she had from Filene’s Basement for you. If you needed a place to stay when you came to visit her in Boston, Auntie Lena would give up her bedroom, and she would sleep on the couch. She would always ask you if you needed anything or got enough to eat. She went out of her way to make sure you were comfortable.
She was like a mother to my mom, and a grandmother to me, even though she was my great aunt. All of my cousins adored her. Auntie Lena valued family, and she never changed, in all of her 93 years.
She would always send you a birthday card with a check for $10, even when you were too old to need money for your birthday. Her generosity and love will carry on in our family. It is my hope that we all could be a little more like Auntie Lena. She will be missed.
I can think of no better way to describe her life than the way she would sign off on her greeting cards with “Lots of Love.”
May the Lord bless you, Auntie Lena. May his light shine upon you and give you peace.
