Prayer Reflection: Day 27

For the living know that they will die; But the dead know nothing, And they have no more reward, For the memory of them is forgotten. – Ecclesiastes 9:5 NKJV

The dead know nothing, which leads some people to believe that the dead “sleep” until Jesus comes again, when the dead shall be resurrected, and the dead in Christ will be caught up in the clouds with Jesus and go to heaven.

Death as “sleep” is a really difficult concept to explain to those who believe in ghosts.

Telling folks that a ghost might be as spirit unconnected to the loved one who died freaks people out.

God is a God of love, and He knows what words to impress someone who is grieving. Truth doesn’t have to be hurtful.

The state of the dead may be a philosophical concept that we may not fully understand, because none of us can really speak from experience when we talk about death. Even Lazarus didn’t seem to know what to say about what death was like after Jesus told him to come forth from the grave.

Regardless of our uncertainty of what might happen when we die, people who believe in Jesus may have nothing to fear, because Christ overcame death.

The Halloween season seems to put a humorous twist on death, melding it with folklore about ghosts and zombies, all fictional.

Like a flower that blooms and then wilts, our life here on earth is temporary, but through Christ, believers can have eternal life.

Jesus is the only man in history who rose again and has the power to offer eternal life. Amen.
