Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit. – Proverbs 18:21 NKJV
One of the four agreements is to be impeccable with your words. Although the four agreements come from Tolec traditions, the Bible tells us very much the same thing.
My Grandpa Joe put it this way: “be careful what you say, how you say it, and whom you say it to.”
I have a tendency to get “hangry” — hungry plus angry. If I am hungry, I am more likely to speak before I think, which is not a good habit.
Because our words are a matter of life and death and hold more power than we know, we can make it a habit of pausing and praying before speaking. Eating a snack before any potentially difficult communications is not a bad idea either.
The Lord knows that we are not perfect, and He can even give us the right words to say if we ask. Amen.
