Prayer Devotional: Day 52

“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). – Matthew 1:23 NIV

Jesus’s name means “God with us.” When Jesus resurrected and returned to heaven, He didn’t leave us completely, because a He gave us the Holy Spirit as a counselor and helper.

The Holy Spirit is not just a warm and fuzzy feeling. He guides and protects us. He leads us to the path of righteousness. When the Holy Spirit redirects our lives, His voice is clear, more clear than any directive we have ever received.

My testimony

I remember a time when the Holy Spirit spoke to me. In 2006, I had attended law school in Las Vegas. Even when I received my letter of admission, I had an intuitive feeling that something was not right. I went to law school anyway, and as the semester wore on, I became continually anxious. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was not meant to be there.

The legal profession, more than any other professional school, has the highest rate of suicide and alcoholism.

I finished one of my classes: legal writing, and got an A, but I felt like I was failing the rest of my classes, even through I studied all the time.

The night before my torts final, I couldn’t sleep. Then, I heard a still, small voice speak to me. The Holy Spirit impressed upon me to discontinue law school. The voice was so clear, and so convincing, that I couldn’t deny it. The next morning, I called the dean and withdrew from law school. I turned down my scholarship and had immediate loans to pay back. I had friends I was leaving behind, but the evidence was clear. God did not want me there. He was saving me from destruction. I never looked back or regretted my decision. Amen.
