For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. – John 3:16 NIV
The Lord is the giver of all life. It almost is ironic that God gave up His only son’s life to save humanity. Jesus is the embodiment of eternal life. Noone on earth gave more than He did.
We can be grateful for such an immense gift.
Perhaps we can only understand eternal life in the context of death.
My mom and I were present in the room when my dad died. We watched him take his last breath. As excruciating as it was to see one of my loved ones die, I could feel God’s peace after my dad took his last breath. My dad no longer was suffering, as he had for over 12 years from Alzheimer’s disease. It was as if my dad was shedding the shell of his body, the way a crab does when it discards its shell.
I may not understand everything about death, but one thing I believe is true: everyone who believes in Jesus can have eternal life. We have a gracious and loving Heavenly Father, and it is by grace that we have been saved. Amen.
